Titans take South England league title

The Grand Final of the Southern Area competition took place on Saturday 5th August between reigning champions Sussex Swans and the Southampton Titans who were undefeated in the 2017 season.
The two previous meetings this season were both won by the Titans in convincing style but the Swans team were determined to try and retain their 2016 Premiership.
The match started under beautiful clear blue skies and the first quarter finished with less than a goal between the sides- the Titans just edging the competition. It was a fiercely contested match between two teams who were clearly determined to put on a good show. At half time the gap had grown slightly to 7 points, 2-9 (21) to 2-2 (14) but despite this it was very clear that the Sussex team had closed the gap between the two sides during the season.

The third quarter started in the same fashion but towards the end of the quarter the Titans started to pull away, the experience of some key players starting to make a difference. The fourth quarter took place in a spectacular downpour (the Great British Summer!) which saw spectators running for cover and the Titans close out the match strongly to secure a 5-17 (47) to 3-4 (22) win.
GB Bulldogs and England Dragonslayers Ruckman Martyn Hinchey capped a good year being crowned as league player of the season for 2017 after the umpires votes for the season were counted.
Both teams would like to especially thank Laurie Diiorio who gave up his spot in the teamsheet to umpire yesterday’s match.
