Finals footy: Dockers overcome Panthers in a Cardiff thriller!

The WARFL Grand Final of 2017 took place in Cardiff on Saturday 30th July 2017 between last years winners Cardiff Panthers and Bristol Dockers… and it was an absolute cracker!

On a Saturday afternoon on a typical Welsh summers day (read: raining), the two teams arrived at St Peters Rugby Club in Cardiff to contest the WARFL title. Both teams were recent winners of the prize with Panthers looking to retain their 2016 title. After winning the minor league, the Cardiff team were probably just favorites for the contest but with Bristol hot on their heels it promised to be a titanic clash between two very even teams

The game started well, with neither team giving even an inch to the other, with the scores generally goal for goal. By the 3rd Quarter however the strains of the game started to show with the Panthers losing two of their most experienced players through injury, ex-GB Bulldogs player David Saunders (Hamstring) and Dan Aldous (Back).

With Bristol slightly ahead by just three goals going in to the final quarter it was still all to play for. The Panthers flew out of the blocks and started to claw some points back before losing two more players to head/blood injuries in a single play, Mike Palmer and James Gibson, proving the physicality of this match did not cease from start to end.

Despite the final quarter fight back, the Dockers held the lead with the final score at 105 – 90.

Thanks to both teams to Kyra Jones and Owain Ryland for taking on Umpire duties for the final.
